Beyond the Central Scheme
While the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana provides a fantastic, uniform central subsidy across all of India (up to ₹78,000 for a 3kW system), that is not the end of the story.
Several progressive state governments are actively competing to promote green energy by offering additional "top-up" subsidies from their own state budgets. This can drastically reduce your upfront cost even further.
Note: State policies are subject to annual budgets. Always verify current availability with your local DISCOM.
1. Uttar Pradesh (UP Solar Yojana)
- Central Subsidy: Up to ₹78,000.
- State Top-Up: UP provides an additional ₹15,000 per kW, strictly capped at ₹30,000.
- Total Potential Subsidy: Up to a massive ₹1,08,000.
*UP also offers highly specialized incentives and rapid approvals for designated "Solar Cities" like Ayodhya.
2. Gujarat (Surya Gujarat Scheme)
Gujarat has historically been a pioneer in rooftop solar installations across India.
While the state transition to the new PM Surya Ghar scheme aligns the core subsidy to the national ₹78,000 standard, Gujarat ensures exceptionally fast DISCOM approvals through the GUVNL portal. Their seamless net metering process makes it the state with the highest rooftop solar adoption rate in the country.
3. Delhi (Delhi Solar Policy)
Delhi's state government offers unique Generation-Based Incentives (GBI) rather than a flat upfront top-up.
- Incentive Model: Delhi offers an amazing ₹3 per unit of electricity generated for residential setups (up to 3kW).
- For larger systems above 3kW, the incentive is ₹2 per unit generated.
- This GBI is credited directly to the consumer's electricity bill or bank account, ensuring a long-term recurring income stream on top of the initial central subsidy.
4. Maharashtra
Administered via MSEDCL, Maharashtra follows the central scheme's ₹78,000 cap strictly without upfront top-ups.
However, the state offers excellent "banking policies" for net metering. This allows your surplus summer energy to be carried forward for an entire year before settlement, maximizing the financial return for consumers during heavy usage months.
5. Haryana and Punjab
Both states are aggressively promoting the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
Haryana, in particular, has drastically simplified the NOC (No Objection Certificate) process for small residential installations under 10kW. This means automatic technical approval is often granted within just a few days of application submission.
