What is an Off-Grid Solar System?
Unlike the PM Surya Ghar scheme (which heavily relies on being "Grid-Tied" via net metering), an Off-Grid system operates completely independently of the state electricity grid.
It relies entirely on high-capacity solar panels to generate power during the day and a massive battery bank to store power for the night. These systems are essential for remote farmhouses, agricultural lands, and off-grid cabins where running standard electrical poles is too expensive or impossible.
Key Components of an Off-Grid System
Building an off-grid system requires highly specialized, rugged equipment:
- 1. High-Capacity Panels: Off-grid systems require a larger panel array to ensure they can power the home AND fully charge the batteries simultaneously, even during short winter days.
- 2. MPPT Charge Controller: A highly specialized device that intelligently regulates the raw voltage and current coming from the panels to the batteries, preventing explosive overcharging. MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is the premium standard over older PWM controllers.
- 3. Deep Cycle Battery Bank: The most expensive and critical part of the system, designed explicitly to be deeply discharged and recharged daily.
- 4. Off-Grid Inverter: Converts the stored DC power from the batteries into standard AC power for household appliances.

What is PM KUSUM?
The PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) scheme provides heavy subsidies directly to farmers to install standalone (off-grid) solar agricultural pumps.
Why is it Revolutionary?
Indian farmers traditionally rely on highly polluting, expensive diesel generators to run their water pumps in fields without grid access. A 3HP or 5HP solar water pump eliminates diesel costs entirely. The panels are often mounted on robust ground structures or even custom tractor-mounted rigs, providing free irrigation for decades.
